Up until now I've been using a version of UGS Platform from July 2017, and I'm pretty used to it. I recently found out there was a newer version, so I'd thought I'd try it out. It is the one from Dec 2018. They mostly work the same, except for one difference that is causing problems. When jogging the mqachine, I tend to set the increment to .1 or .01 until I get close to where I want to set my zero. On the old UGS, I could switch between Inches and mm to get a coarse or fine adjustment. For example, I would set the XY jog to .1 and it would move relatively fast, then to get a smaller movement I would hit the mm button and get a much smaller move, switching from .1 inches to .1 mm. Now, in the new UGS, when I switch from inches to mm the increment amount also changes, i.e. when I press the mm button the increment changes from .1 inch to 2.54mm. I would like the units to stay the same, not change. Is there a setting I'm missing in the preferences that is making it do this, or is this just how it works? It is really inconvenient, and if it can't be changed then I will go back to the old UGS.

That would be a deal breaker for me on the new version as well. I use the inch/mm switch trick the same as you do.

Oh yes, you went STRAIGHT to my biggest complaint about the 18DEC build also! I do exactly as you do, use MM for fine jogging and INCH for longer jogging. So far I love everything about the newer UGS Platform but I simply can NOT use it unless/until that function is changed back.
I've already put in a feature request on the Github page, you should do that also. If enough people ask it might be changed if/when they ever do another update.

I see that you found where to submit things on the Github page. I know because I'm subscribed to it and I got your post in my Github UGS digest this morning!
From some of the replies it sounds like most others don't understand why you'd want to jog that fast (DUH!) and are worried that they might crash their machine if they forget to switch it back.
I've crashed my machine a few times but I've gotten better at not forgetting. But the luxury of having a simple way to jog fast or slow far outweighs my concern about crashing!
Sadly, I bet they don't plan to "fix" this issue in future releases, although I'm going to resubmit my complaint about it too, so maybe they will change it. Worth a shot, you know?

Maybe they could add a dedicated "fast jog" button that the user could set a specific jog distance. That would solve the issue of forgetting to switch back to mm. I crashed my cutter into the workpiece once because I forgot to switch it, but that happened only once.

The program's author has responded and pointed out there are commands in the keymap section for quickly adjusting the step sizes. I tried adding the Multiply x 10 XY step size and Divide x 10 XY step size, and the same with Z, but it won't let me go below .01, which doesn't help when I am edge finding as I need .001 inch accuracy.
There are also key bindings to set XY step to 1, .1, .01, and .001, as well as for the Z. I have set these up using the F5-F12 keys on my keyboard and will give this a try, but it is not as convenient as it could be... I use a USB numpad as a pendant, and there aren't enough buttons to do all those things, which means going back to the keyboard for some stuff. Maybe jst a matter of getting used to it.

What did you wind up doing? Find another workaround or just get used to it?

What did you wind up doing? Find another workaround or just get used to it? Just got used to it. I set up some keys on my keypad to increase and decrease the XY and Z distances, but still no way to get it down to .001, so set up F keys...F6,7,8 Z .1, .01, .001 and F10,11,12 for XY .1, .01, .001.

Please add any thoughts you have on this to the UGS wishlist thread as well. We can address some when we undertake that project.

For a while, I used the UGS pendant controller that allowed an iPhone to act as a pendant -- and I liked it enough to post a note on the link Bruce just shared. But the setting up the connection to the iPhone was enough overhead that I looked for another approach -- and bought a wireless mouse for my laptop so that I could use my right hand to control jogging to set my zeros while my laptop was (is) restricted to the left side of my Carve King.
At this point, my only request for UGS enhancement is a mechanism to allow the jog control portion of the screen to be enlarged during the zeroing process. It works as is, but if I'm looking at my workpiece and my cutting tool as I set the zeros, my cursor occasionally wanders off the screen button. Larger screen buttons (only needed during the zeroing process) would eliminate that (rather minor) issue.

One feature that bCNC has is a "Move Gantry to mouse location" which I usually use after homing. A work area box is drawn on the display showing the dimensions of the machine bed (set in the bCNC settings). So I know I can click in this box and I won't crash into the machine ends.

I have the same complaint so I prototyped adding a toggle button for jog distance. I've got it looking correct: I just need to plug it in to my shop machine at some point (after I'm done spending so much time on airplanes) to actually test that it works.
