We are looking to program in some changes to UGS. As you may know, it is an open source program with the code published.
I'd be interested in hearing what changes you'd like to see in UGS before we start the project. We aren't going to make a total revamp, but if there is something you would like to see let me know.

I have been using IntelliG-Code for close to a year now, no stalls or crashes, works fine with Z probe, has provisions for X&Y probe too. Other features I do not use.
Only gripes: 1) it will step in 4mm, 3mm, 2.5mm, 2mm 1.5mm,1mm, 0.5mm, 0.1mm and maybe 0.05mm. At 4mm when you hold down an axis button it only travels at 4mm/s , so moving long distances takes forever. 2) It can get locked in continuous z movement if you click too fast, very annoying 3) Program preview is Ok, just OK.
Other that that I think the interface is better, it's free for a month than cost $50.

I've been poking around in that source code a bit myself lately (on airplanes for more time than I'd like). The jog controller is pretty annoying. I've also been trying to think through what kind of software safeguards I could put in place to stop myself from accidentally trashing router bits, half-completed pieces, etc...
Do you have a github fork already set up, or are you working directly with Will Winder?

Thanks for the feedback fellas.
To answer your question, I haven't set up a fork and I'm not working with Will on it. I'm not opposed to it, I just haven't approached him about it.

Derek, I didn't realize you were the one who wrote UGS. If you did, kudos to you and nice job! I've used UGS since I got my M3 last year and here are a few things that might help a newbie out: Have a GUI or window that indicates whether G54 is set and what the G54 coordinates are. I may have forgotten to set this early on, and its entirely possible the machine didn't know where it was and wrecked my workpiece. Would be good for newbies. This is kind of along the lines of freik's safeguards suggestion. Maybe put some of the information in the main graphic window: active gcode states would be a good candidate. I haven't figured out how to pan in the visualizer window, so maybe that feature doesn't exist. I would find that helpful.

The thing keeping me from using the latest version has been mentioned before but the jogging, Fine vs Coarse, is important to me. On the older versions of Platform I can click the Inch button and set those to make big jog movements and then switch back to MM and use that for tiny jog movements. Each setting, Inch and MM, doesn't affect the other settings.
On the newer version the two settings are tied together, change Inches step increments and it also changes things on the MM side and vice versa.
Derek, if you could separate those two settings again that would be a big help to those of us who use them for jogging.

Thank you for the feedback guys.
We will look to incorporate some of these changes on the project.
For clarification sake, we did not write ugs. I just realize that a lot of our customers use it, and we use it a lot ourselves, so I'd like to make some changes to it that will better suit everyone's needs.

What ideas are you thinking at implementing? Derek, I can't write much code but I'm fairly adept at tweaking it. To that end I cloned the Github repository of UGS and installed Netbeans 8.1 thinking I might stumble upon a way to reinstate the MM/Inch button functionality that I want. However, I can't seem to get Netbeans to find the right file or files to open to allow me to poke around. Is the UGS repository and Netbeans 8.1 all I need to tweak the app or am I completely off track? Thanks!

Not sure about that one Patrick. I have an outside developer on the job so I'm not personally all that familiar.
I don't want to describe what I'm after quite yet in the event we can't pull it off. Don't want to get anyone's hopes up.

Ignoring tool change commands. Manually removing the T1 M6 is annoying.
