I noticed that my anti-racking cables are fraying, and have also loosened quite a bit. I think I know why (I believe they wound up being twisted when I tightened them down), but I need some replacements. The idea of those things breaking while I'm in the middle of a run seems worse than breaking a guitar string while playing. What gauge of stranded wire should I be looking for?

It's 1/16" braided cable. It is readily available at the big box hardware stores.

I have been going thru these, I even used 3/32 cable and still they fray and snap. Can't figure out why, I don't have them super tight either.

I designed a 3/16” diameter cable setup - new Pulleys, pulley mounts, etc. Pm me if your interested. Increases cross sectional area by 6X over original.

They snap all different places, I think diameter of wheel is too small and too severe a bend for the cables. quick and easy to replace and I keep spares now, but just hoping it doesn't mess up a job. So far I really notice no difference in the machining when it snaps. Finally got around to making my corner touch plate and writing the gcode routines for probing in bcnc.
