This box is carved from 3/4 inch Oak. The top is covered with 8 layers of veneer alternating Maple and Walnut. A shell is 3D carved into the top using a file Vectric supplied with their software. Pretty happy with the result.

Stephen, you are the Fancy Box King! Really looks great. And another great idea to layer veneers with relief carving. Excellent!

Very nice. Very. And inspiring.
What glue did you use for stacking the veneers? Any special clamping process?

Very nice. Very. And inspiring. What glue did you use for stacking the veneers? Any special clamping process? Thank you. I use Titebond II glue. I glue up quite a few layered items for boxes and other small projects so I created the glue up jig in the attached picture. I covered it with packing tape to avoid having to use wax paper or anything. Works pretty well. With veneer in particular I try to get just enough glue on it to cover the surface but not create much squeeze out other wise it gets really messy. Also when gluing up a lot of layers like this I find doing 3 at a time and letting them set up long enough to not slide around when adding more is also helpful. Attachments:

Did the carving on this box in 1/8th Maple over 1/8th Walnut.

I am new, so mostly use Easel, but to do this what kind of program do I need?! the flower box would make an amazing family heirloom for my daughter. Is that a picture you found? or did you design it yourself??

Is that a picture you found? or did you design it yourself?? I use Vcarve Desktop from Vectric. The image of the Lilies is a free 3D file they include with that application. There are also a lot of images available for sale through them too. www.vectric.com/
