I've been working on this project off and on for 8 or 9 months. I posted the eagle head relief back in October but then I had to figure out how to paint and finish it. So after many hours of Youtube videos on painting and finishing techniques I went back and made the design I originally had in mind all along. The relief was created from scratch in ArtCAM as well as the lettering and border was created and toolpath generated with ArtCAM. The relief was rough cut with a 1/8" ball nose and finish cut was 1.5mm ball nose. For some reason I had a lot of problems with wood shavings wrapping around the 1/8" ball nose end mill. It caused some gouging spots along the upper right of the relief oval. Frustrating but I went ahead and went with it. The lettering was carved with a 60 deg, 1/4" V-bit. The border was another test that kind of failed. It was just too fine of cut in crappy pine wood. It looks decent at the top and bottom with the grain of the wood, but the sides cut against the grain, it tore out. The whole piece is colored with a water base blue dye. I painted the relief skull with DecoArt acrylic paints; White mixed with a touch of Daffodil Yellow to get a bone color. Navy blue and then mixed it with white for the light blue. Christmas Red and Daffodil Yellow was air brushed to get the fade of the mid red stripe. Black for the nose. Lettering and border is a silver "Extreme Sheen" metallic paint. I used the Americana Gel Stain in a walnut color as a wash to get the antique finish. I used a spray can with satin lacquer to finish it off with a clear coat.
