Finally got around to improving the design of my phone case! I created a composite skyline of Munich, Germany using famous and unique buildings located within the city. Munich is one of my favorite cities I have lived in and holds a special place in my heart. The case was purchased on Amazon for around $10. I used a 30deg 0.125" V-Carve bit. I used easel for the design and gcode generation using the built in Vcarve settings. I'm happy with the detail the machine and material combination was able to achieve. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the material on the back of the phone case held up to such a delicate carve. Time will tell how well the details hold up in a daily use condition, but for now I'm very pleased with the machine. I ended up milling a pocket 0.200" deep with about 0.010" of clearance on the sides and "press fit" the phone case in there for mounting purposes, allowing me to not worry about clamps getting in the way of the carve. Now I just need to decide if I stain it as I had the previous version. I am afraid staining may cause some of the detail to get lost, but it sure made the last case pop.

That's really cool and a really good idea too.

I am new to cnc and am not sure what it would take, but just curuious on your thoughts.

Best I can come up with is a two stage carve: one for the exterior, second for the cavity the phone fits into. The cavity carve would need a specialized tool with a positive carving feature to create the recess the phone fits into. My concern is the durability of the wood as a phone case due to the wall thickness being so low. I would hate to do all the work only to find the thing wont hold up. However, I know others have done it, so I should just bite the bullet and figure it out. Anyone want to collaborate?

Here is my updated cover with the stain. It made some details pop, like the Allianz Arena wording on the stadium and the BMW symbol at the top of the tower. However, as feared, the stain soaked into some of the finer pieces and I lost some detail there. Again, Time will tell how well it holds up to daily use. Overall very happy! Attachments:

Very interesting. I wonder if it work as a thin wood insert into a clear plastic case. Maybe too bulky. Nice work and great detail too.
