I'd go with beeswax for anything that's going to be handled or eaten off of. I've heard boiled linseed oil works too but I've never tried it. Pretty much anything used to finish a butcher block should be good too...

I primarily make jewelry, aka trinkets or tchotchskis with my M3 CNC and laser. Mostly using walnut or cherry. I have used purpleheart and padauk also. I primarily use a beeswaz/jojoba oil mix. It pretty much is non-allergenic when next to the skin put remails soft. My choice for a harder finish is shellac. I make my own from shellac flakes or powder I get off the internet. Totally different results than from the canned stuff. I try to now avoid boiled linseed oil and polyurethane for articles that may come in skin contact. Some people have allergic reactions to certain kinds of woods especially the "exotic" ones. I'm no expert but I've done a lot of reading.

I would use boiled linseed oil with a tad of Japan Dryer added - then after a few days drying - finish it off with bees wax as linkreincarnate suggested. If you want to completely seal it water tight with a hard durable coating - polyester sealer/top coat from Simtec or Seagrave coatings.
