Hello All. New to the CNC world, mostly. In college about a million years ago I did some CNC programming for an IT class. Been a computer geek for 30 years now, and am always into tech, fabrication etc. My family calls me Inspector Gadget. Stuck in an apartment for the forseeable future so will be working to contain dust and noise. I have a window and a hefty exhaust fan from Hydro/Aquaponic experiments I did in my apartment in NYC. (Hot peppers, not pot). I've been 3D printing for several years and have wanted to get into CNC for just about ever. Want to get a laser for the M3 also. That and the exhaust setup may be a more neighbor friendly solution for now. We shall see. KMP = King Monkey Pony. Long story but a reference to the song Skull Crusher Mountain by the guy who wrote the Cake song for the game Portal. Like I said, geek.
Cheers.

Hi KMP, welcome to the forum. I think you'll love your M3, I've got one and it's a great machine.

Hello, Been thinking about buying the M3 for months now. Finally decided to make the move and see what happens. As a IT guy I've always been fascinated with computers controlling things. I also like diy electronics, woodworking and model railroading. I have a couple of 3d printers and one of those small chinese cnc macnines. Not sure what I'm going to do with the machine but I'm hoping I can eventually use it to build scenery for the model railroad or god knows what else.

Hi all, I'm James from Texas. I'm a c++ software engineer who got involved with helping high school students in an organization called FIRST. We started FRC team 3481 "BroncBotz" back in 2011. At the time I was the programmer for the team but jumped ship into Mechanical Engineering around 2014 especially because I and some of the mentors on the team entered a NASA SRR challenge (I thought we had a shot because we work code video software, but all my time was spent learning how to CAD) found that I should have been a ME, and wondered why I never was. For the past 5 years all our robots have used a 2D printer on paper, we slap adhesive on the paper onto the sheet metal and cut it via bandsaw. Try to get some precision using a drill press... truth is, there are still many robot teams out there that do not have a CNC machine that really need one, because they were not affordable. So having something affordable is going to be great, and I hope other teams find their way here as we have! One other note: I got into 3D printing around 2014 as well because we have some other engineers in the company who use them for prototyping. I tried to push 3D printing to the limit, for example I was able to 3D print a linear actuator. The acme lead screw is 3D printed and has a cavity to insert a 1/8" steel shaft. (Being from Texas we have close relation with Vex Robotics and Vex parts the shaft is from Vex). I tried to push it as far as I could, but came to the realization that the material is only so strong, and CNC is how to get to the next level... so here I am.

Welcome to the forum. We love when FIRST teams use our machines. I take a lot of personal pride in knowing that our machines help the teams create some pretty amazing things. Feel free to recommend us to other teams.
Thanks for sharing your background. It sounds like your passion for the mech said and your experience on the code side makes you a hell of an asset for the team.
On another note, a lot of the uC coding I’ve done (well the little I’ve done) has been in C, some flavor of basic, or assembly. What type of devices are you compiling C++ for?

On another note, a lot of the uC coding I’ve done (well the little I’ve done) has been in C, some flavor of basic, or assembly. What type of devices are you compiling C++ for? They are various machines for video broadcasting, basically windows machines with our own hardware, and also some comm/FTDI work in control surfaces. I use visual studio for this work. For the robots we were using VxWorks on the cRIO, and luckily it was c++ 3 back then, now its c++ 11 on the RoboRIO. I use eclipse for this, well actually I have a simulated base code in visual studio that uses OSG (open scene graph)... which is the remains of a failed attempt to make a space game, but we salvaged the code for robotics because the physics was a good fit (translated some code from 3D into 2D and then to 1D for rotary systems). Truth be known, I wasn't kidding when I jumped ship... some of the students arose back in 2015 and took over *all* the coding and even switched to c#, so I have been able to focus all my attention to the CAD and helping the CAD team we just never could find anyone in M.E. to help us... and there is a saying "don't hope for change, be the change" I guess that stuck with me. So all the coding I did for the game and robotics is now being used on the curivator project, which is another failed attempt... but I have no regrets! we learn from these things, and share with the kids try to get them excited about STEAM and recruit new kids to join the team.

Well as most forums go, we need a proper introduction thread. A place to do the obvious and let folks know what our level of experience is and what we are here for. I have absolutely zero experience with cnc and haven't even purchased my MillRight cnc. However, it's in the works. Hopefully, this expands into a large working group of individuals where I can gain further insight.

Good day all. My name is Eric. I work with wood. I am a SEC in the US Army and have been on active duty for a little over 16 years now. I have been working with wood since I was about 7. It all started with my father and his hobby of building R/C airplanes. He was always a scratch builder so designing, measuring and cutting have always been in there. I have been throwing around the idea of getting a CBC for a while now, and Household 6 finally signed off on the training schedule and approved the budget... So here I am, the proud owner of a Carve King (that is fully assembled and operating properly), anxiously awaiting the inaugural run... I look forward to sharing all of my growing pains and triumphant victories here, and hope to learn as much as share here. I a m also a student of astronomy and cosmology, so I am hoping that this machine can assist with some telescope builds with my astronomy club. That is all...
