Has anyone here thought of making a full enclosure for the M3 and having it completely vacuum-ported so the whole enclosure is one big dust shoe? That way you need not have a clumsy dust shoe right on top of the cutting area, getting in the way and blocking your view.
Ideally, the vacuum would be powerful enough to pull every spec of dust and chips out of the enclosure, but more practically, if it removed even half of the dust, and pulled just most of it away from the cutting area, that would be a win.
Given the small footprint of the M3, and therefore the modest volume of an enclosure, does this seem feasible?

I would imagine that you'd need a very powerful vacuum for this to work.

It would be cool to see it done, but I am pretty sure it would leave a lot of dust on the table because there just wouldn’t be enough air flow to pick it up.

I haven't tried to build one yet but have had similar thoughts about an enclosure like you describe. Since I use a shop vac with a Dust Deputy I was thinking maybe a wide port across the back of the enclosure at the level of the table. Then on the front of the enclosure have a way to pump air into the enclosure blowing the dust toward the port on the back. Thought about putting a fan on the front or maybe even running a hose from the vent out on the shop vac creating kind of a closed loop. Maybe some day I will find the time to do some experimentation.

I hadn't thought of that, a fan or something to blow from the front and then vacuum at the back bottom to pull it out. As I said in the original post, it doesn't have to remove everything, if it removes half or more of it it's a win for me. And most importantly is if it keeps the really fine stuff from covering everything in the shop!

I'm about to give this a try, with a vacuum port at the back and a fan at the front. Will report back here in a few weeks (I work slow) to update anyone interested.

I’m eager to hear how it goes. I know you’ll keep us in the loop.

You could do it where it is in a cabnet that is like a bead blaster cabnet. The stuff goes down the sides and the bottom is a funnel.
If your setup works semi good you might want to add momentary airblast. That puts the dust up in the air again and gets a second chance to be pulled away. You can set up an electric timer solinoid that blasts every 10 seconds or have a button you push.

Made the first cuts today on the plywood for the enclosure. Hope to have it built in a few days and then I gotta work out a place to put it, and then plan where to cut holes for the vacuum ports. This is gonna take awhile, folks, I don't work as long or as hard as I used to!

Thanks for all the good wishes, guys. Knee is 90% better, walking without crutches now. Plan to get back to work, slowly, on the enclosure this week. I'm also upgrading a LED security floodlight with a Cree COB LED this week. Might make a video of that.
