"Normal" motors tend to consume more current when they stall. Stepper motors are on the other hand consuming a more constant current no matter the condition. Such a simple explanation. That makes perfect sense. Thank you.

The current limit setting of the stepper driver keeps from burning out the motor windings. There is nothing protecting a regular motor from over-current unless it is added to the circuit like a motor starter with thermal overload.
