what kind of software do I need ? I just want to design and build things like crib boards, coaster, plaques etc The two options I see most are Fusion360 and Easel It seems like Fusion360 has a much wider audience of capability and is becoming or is already the de facto standard. There are a ton of options out there though, all comes down to preference and the amount of time you have to learn the software. So far Fusion360 has been the biggest learning curve for me.

Fusion is a beast to learn but in my opinion it's worth the effort if you're ever planning on fabricating or going beyond basic carving.
In your case, Easel would work just fine and is easier to learn.

Easel looks easy but, No internet in my garage "Yet" lol I'm a newby, I have found fusion 360 fairly easy to figure out, I haven't tried the other software choices yet, fusion will allow you to work offline, but will require you to access the internet I think every two weeks in order to start the software. I move my m3 between two locations, one does not have internet at all, I simply hotspot my phone, start the software, and go into offline mode, (Click on the little clock icon on the upper right of the top bar, and select go offline), turn hotspot off, and then fusion is good for another two weeks offline.

Under what circumstances does it do that? Only when the printer is connected? Only on a certain command?

I have created a markdown version of the original post (converted to html) and placed it here link
This should be phone friendly, content is identical but format semantics are markdown compliant with added bold, italics, separators, hyperlinks, headers, etc. to help find the sections easier like a reference guide. Note: The top sentence has a hyperlink back to this origin, to access the forum, author, and pdf file. Hope you like it... comments / changes / improvements are welcome. *A word about the color scheme- I know some people like me prefer high contrast (i.e. white on black vs. black on white) it seems now days people just leave this alone and use a dark reader plugin (like for chrome) to make it easier on the eyes. Black on white is preferred by others or when you have a device outdoors during the day.

A question about the Spindle for M3 and cutting tools. In the excellent Beginner Guide, under Cutting and Spindles it says: "There are both reducers/collets for routers that allow the use of a 1/8 inch tool and there are collets available for the spindle kit that allow the 1/4 tools. I won’t go into all the different styles as there are many. If you see “ER style, ER11, ER32” this is simply a style of the collet that works as a system. I recommend checking out www.elairecorp.com for router collets. I think I misunderstood this paragraph; I looked at Elaire Corp's website under Router Collet adapters www.elairecorp.com/colletadapter.html and only saw reducing collet adapters. I called Elaire and was told they don't sell expanding collet adapters and there is no such thing. I think I'm missing something. Any advice about using 1/4 inch shank cutting tools with the 1/8 Spindle kit for M3? Thanks!

If you are using a DeWalt 611 router then you will need a different collet for a 1/4" sized end mill. You can't go from smaller to larger diameter tool sizes. You can go smaller from larger, 1/4" to an 1/8" with a reducer. If you are using the 400W spindle option that (if I remember right) is an ER11 standard collet size. You can find a set of different tool sized collets on Amazon like these: www.amzn.com/B015DVLVBM/Or just buy the size you need.

I just purchased the Carve King and thought that it was a stand alone. I'm not sure but it seems like I need to connect a computer to it. Is this correct? I have been playing with VCarve desktop trial version and it is quite user friendly. Fusion 360 has me stumped right after the program launches.

You do need a PC to run a g-code sender to the Uno/CNC Shield controller like Universal G-Code Sender (UGS) winder.github.io/ugs_website/. VCarve and Fusion 360 would be classified as CAD/CAM design and machining software.
