I raised the gantry for a few reasons. One reason is to accommodate larger stock for the 4th axis. It's a big improvement over not having to deal with the z limit switch getting bumped when running your 1st tool path. I would highly suggest that anyone with a 4th axis do this. I did end up having to do some grinding on the 4 bolt holes so that I could make adjustments when I trammed everything in for the Z height. I would incorporate that into your design if you plan on making your own end plates to raise everything up. Maybe +- 1mm. You'll see in one of the pictures an idea on how to deal with square stock for the 3 jaw chuck. Next week, parts should be in to extend the 4th axis past the T slot bed and I'll make a full size baseball bat out of maple. The 4th axis seems like it handled walnut pretty decent. I think with changing the roughing parameters to ... I think- reverse helix around A axis -maybe, you could really speed things up.

Did you notice and decrease in stiffness of that axis with a flat plate bracket? I was wondering if anyone has tried a steel channel to either replace stock brackets or in your case a make a riser. I don't have a CNC yet but I am a mechanical engineer and that looks to be the weakest part of a good looking machine

The aluminum riser brackets seem to be pretty stiff. They're 6061 0.25". I have only been tinkering around with small stuff on the 4th axis since I am limited on time for projects. I have zero issues with any flex. I have not used the Mega V yet for the normal x,y, and z. I do not think I have have any issues though with the stiffness of the aluminum. I may be wrong on that and only time will tell. I also bought a 0.25" steel plate that I will eventually have cut to make newer and taller brackets. Honestly, I think it will come down to all 6 screws holding on the riser brackets to the gantry if there was to be any movement or rigidity issues. I'll post an update when ever a get a few big carves completed.
