I have been working at this for days and im at the end of my rope! I am computer illiterate but have learned a lot over the past week so I think I can finally explain my issue that someone can understand. I purchased a brand new HP laptop after i finished assembling the Mega V and connected. I did the set up wizard on UGS, downloaded Vcarve and I was cutting. Those were the good times. Everything worked as it should. I hated the laptop for varies reasons and already have a large gaming computer in the house so I returned the laptop and set up my desktop in the garage. I plugged in the same cord to a USB port and my troubles begin. I have read the similar issues on this thread but not the exact same... so no luck. I have now used Google so much that they sent me a birthday card. I have downloaded Arduino and tried to install the drivers a dozen different ways. I feel this is my problem... I can see in device manager the "connection" of mega v and when I look at "driver details" its always the "Microsoft windows" driver that have always been there. I download arduino .exe and the driver box is checked to install drivers on download... no luck. I install arduino .zip and then go to the connection port and "browse" to the arduino file and then drivers along with sub folders... no change. The reply is always something like " You already have the best drivers installed" . When I open UGS it wants to connect on COM1 but in my device manager it always shows my mega v connection as COM3. I have tried changing com numbers but only seemed to make things worse to the point of no connection at all. When I leave things as is and click "connect" on UGS it does say in the lower window of UGS "connected to com1 @11500 baud" but the set up wizard says "no something something for this controller" and in the menu under firmware it will pop up "no firmware" and also "GRBL hasnt finished booting" under another tab. I have been to Github and read all the issues and solutions. no luck. I have restarted computer and entered BIOS to look for some enable or disable button that might fix my problem... no luck. I have been to the control panel (I think) for devices and click on the device it sees for the mega v and it does see the drivers as an error but when I troubleshot it, it tells me it cant find a solution. I have restarted the computer by holding shift while hitting reset and it opens under a troubleshooting menu that you click on advanced and then I think , F7 to have it disable "Microsoft required signature for download" and again tried... you guessed it ...no luck! One thing that confuses me is under device manager with the mega v NOT plugged into tower, under "Ports (com & lpt) it lists Communications Port (COM1) all the time and when I plug in the mega v cord to a usb port it will now show "ArduinoMega" as COM3 and still lists Communications Port (COM1) below it. So am I really on COM1 port??? And just switiching the "COM1 to COM3 in UGS at top of page doesnt work. Ultimately, I feel its the driver issue but the laptop didn't need anything to make it work so that confuses me. Secondly, Im not 100% sure that I am truly making the connection that UGS is saying I am. ...and this is the condensed version of my week. Not to mention the hour long conversation with a computer store owner who suggested I go into BIOS to disable "serial ports" because that is where Arduino shows up when plugged in but I dont have that option in BIOS.. so no luck.
I tried! Please Help. Chris

If it is a Mega V it comes set up with the proper (aka works, shielded, etc) USB cord. If you are using win 10, you should have been good. However, it seems like you've stuck your finger in the socket and 'bad things. happened. First thing you have to do is see if you can talk to the board. Go here www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software download the arduino IDE. Once installed, go to 'tools' menu, and 'board'. Select 'uno' or 'mega' if you have the 4th axis. then pick the com port its on. Then look to the upper right corner there is a little mag glass icon that says 'serial monitor', click on that. This should show that the proper driver is installed and you can talk to the machine. BTW, this is good for win 7 also.

Thanks for the reply!! I have seen that suggestion in another post and when I open arduino and click on that circle in the top right is says in the bottom window "error while setting serial port parameters" I see the "Port" selection in the drop down menu in tools. It has two selections of COM1 and Arduino Mega as COM3, I chose COM3 but selecting either one gives the same error result.

I have... BOARD:"Arduino Mega or Mega 2560" PROCESSOR: "ATmega2560(Mega 2560)" PORT: COM3 (Arduino Mega or Mega 2650)"
The other window opens and it has nothing listed in it like yours does and at the bottom of original window it has "error while trying to set parameters of serial port"

do you have a 4 axis mega V? If you don't you should be using the 'uno' board.

I have the rotary 4th axis.

If you see the ArduinoMega COM3 in the device manager then you are connected to the board hardware wise. If you see a Port COM1 still listed you must have a hardware based serial port (9 pin DB connector)
It sounds like you have an installation issue with UGS. It could be the Java version or something funky with UGS itself.
I think it is recommended to uninstall all versions of java and UGS and reinstall. Make sure if you are running 32bit or 64bit hardware and Windows versions.

Yes, I have one serial port that I believes is a DVI. It's like 3 rows of 8 holes. I have uninstalled a bunch of things and reinstalled. I can try again but now that I've learned a lot from you guys I think after work I'm going to try to go into device manager and with the USB cord for cnc unhooked I will only have the COM1 under "PORTS". I think in "properties" under drivers there is a "disable this device" and "uninstall" buttons. I'll try disable first and see if I can eliminate it from the equation and hopefully when the cnc USB cord is plugged in it will recognize it as com1 and be the only one under ports and all my problems are solved... lol... we will see. Thanks for the suggestion!

I know you have the 4th axis, but maybe you should try and install Open Builds Connect, it replaces UGS. Try using that instead of UGS and see if things work any better. No 4th axis support but it will at least give you more data if it works.

Same issue happen to me over the the weekend. I manage to re install the GBRL and UGS the it acknowledge the Board or Arduino Mega not the machine it's not responding any movement .The UGS is work but not the CNC machine. My next guess is that the core or the board attached to Arduino where the step motors are connected needed to be reinstall in Arduino IDE? This System is very sensitive if you have anything else connected to computer other than the CNC.
I need the some assembly experienced to fully understand this trouble. My CNC is stuck for now a week.

I came across the exact same issue yesterday! No serial ports found.. I think it has something to do with a windows update as it worked perfectly fine 2 days ago. I do however need a fix for this!! If you have V-carve software, open the V-transfer program and see if it does the same! Or download another UGS program “free, just search for UGS g-code” and pick the Java one or what ever other then the “platform”. See if you get the same message.. I do in all three cases. While I am happy to hear I am not the only one dealing with this. It really stinks! There was a Java update, I plan to contact Microsoft to see if they can help as well as crossing my fingers maybe someone here might be able to assist. Feel free to msg me. Should I get a solution or fix I will try to post it. If it is complicated If you dm me I could maybe connect via voip or phone to help. Please should you or anyone find a fix try to remember me as well.. very respectfully Jonh88
