Good Morning everyone, I've been having a problem with my Mega V that I've tried various solutions for based on other posts I've found here, but nothing has fixed it for me yet.
Frequently during cuts the CNC stops performing, and often UGS freezes as well. On occasion this happens early in the operation. It's never necessarily at the same point. Job will stop processing. Sometimes I'll be able to home/reset everything in UGS, but usually I'll have to restart the software, sometimes it seems I need to power cycle the CNC, sometimes it seems I need to disconnect/reconnect the USB cord.
I've thought the problem might have been a loose USB cord, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've heard dirty power could be the issue, and a UPS could fix it, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've heard different software like bcnc might work better, but I still ran into the exact same problem.
This is very frustrating, especially since I'd like to start tackling much longer jobs, but if I'm constantly having to restart a multi-hour carve that doesn't seem reasonable.
Please, what am I missing?

How old of laptop/PC are you using? I think the older USB interfaces don't have the speed to keep up with streaming g-code. I think you want to have at least USB 2.0, port with black tab. USB 1.0 has a white tab and USB 3.0 has a blue tab. The white tab USB 1.0 will probably have problems. Sometimes a better higher quality USB cable will help. If you don't have a newer machine you may want to look at using a Raspberry Pi 4 with at least 2GB of RAM (around $55)

The laptop is basically brand new, but not exactly top end. Just double checked and all the USB ports are 2 or better. I might go the Raspberry pi route eventually. Can you recommend a good resource for how to set that up? I've used pi's in the past, but I'm not exactly a power user.

The other thing to try is to buy a better quality USB cable. Then make sure you don't have an electrical noise problem buy moving the router power cable away from the other control wiring. I recommend pulling it out of the drag chain and hang it from the ceiling someway.

Like I stated earlier, I've replaced the USB cable already. I'd say it's better quality than what I originally had, but to be honest I'm not sure how to tell a "good" usb cable.

I found that stopping the visualizer once the run begins can help.

Is the usb cable shielded? Also, have you disabled a lot of the background stuff that windows likes to do as far as updates, power save modes, screen saver, etc? One more thing, even though your usb cable stays plugged into the laptop, the laptop needs to be on a flat surface and not move at all. The usb connection cannot be interrupted one bit, even a slight wiggle of the cord can cause your connection to freak out. I’ve done it a few times.

If it continues, email support at millrightcnc.com and give them 2 full business days to respond. This isn't a offshore cnc machine builder. They will help you out.

I went through the same thing - UGS would randomly freeze or lose connection. I went through all of the suggestions in all of the forums I could find. Nothing solved my problem until I tried a newer laptop. I bought an inexpensive Windows laptop to dedicate to the Carve King and haven't had a problem since.
