Hi,
We bought a Mega-V and the Z-axis is build with a T8 lead screw and a POM plastic nut. I believe that that type of leadscrew is suitable for 3D printers but will be to weak to withstand milling operation for a long enough time.
Our mill is not even in operation yet that I'm already thinking about replacing the T8 leadscrew by a ballscrew. There will be things to modify to make a decent size ballscrew fit in because there is not enough space between the two plates. It will also displace the center of gravity and the cutter position toward the front of the machine.
In the meantime, I'd like to know if anyone has tried to use a brass nut instead of the POM nut that comes with the machine. I tend to think that it would be more durable but might not be as good to deal with the backlash. The 3D printing world has a couple of brass nut options to offer and many comes with a spring to deal with the backlash. There are some that seem slim enough to fit between the two plates without having to replace or modify anything else... but a bracket would be needed to attach the nut to the motor plate.
Thank you David @ Artefact

It's a good thought David, but I can attest that the POM nut has worked well on the Mega V and on the Carve King (original and CK2) for years. Very few ever need replacement.

Thank you Derek, it's good to know...
I installed the brass nut and it seem to work fine. I thought I took a picture but I can't find it... I'll take another when I get a chance.
I think I'll still go forward with the beefier ballscrew idea though. I'll try to keep you posted on the upgrade process & result.
Cheers
