So in order to avoid doing housework today I vacated to the garage for a while. Cut this in Poplar. Not sure how to finish it. Any suggestions? Piece is 9" tall by about 4" wide. Roughed with a 1/4" flat mill, finish pass with a 1/16" tapered ballnose. Attachments:

Poplar is the worst wood to stain.

Nice looking piece! Aforww gave good advice on the finishing. Let us have a gander at it when you are done!

Nice work! Did you create the 3D file? If not, can you share where you got the file from?

Thanks for the link on the painting! Was dreading staining so decided to give the chalk paint a try. Didn't come out quite like I wanted it to but was worth a shot. I can say if you try this technique practice on a scrap project, it's harder than it looks! the paint dries so fast.. I lost a lot of the small detail under the paint layers. This carving was kind of an experiment anyway (hence the Poplar wood and not something fancier) to see how the details would come out at a small scale... May try it again with some better wood. I did get the file from Etsy as you noticed Breslinmr. That seller has quite a few cool (cheap) stl models, I've bought a handful of them. Sure do wish I knew how to make models like that :/ Attachments:

That gave it a cool rustic look though.

Be cautious I noticed some designs that are free on other sites and some people are using them and selling them. Depends what software you have I’ve been experimenting a little making couple off clocks /frames. By the way looks ok to me but sometimes we’re are own worse critics I’ve even just thrown stuff away as I wasn’t happy and never even showed anybody lol
