Machine: Carve King

Just ordered the Carve King in the Black Starboard. I need to work pieces which are 8" wide by 36" long by 1" thick which I can not do as the rear frame is solid. Is there any reason I should not simply route an opening in the rear frame flush with the bed and say 3" tall and 10" long allowing for longer material? As an alternative I am thinking of creating a rear frame from 1/2" aluminum with this opening machined into the new piece, I would only go to aluminum if the modification to the oem rear frame would not allow for sufficient rigidity. Anyone attempted anything like this?
