When I first plugged in my Arduino and shield I got a puff of white smoke once. I did not have the motors connected just the fan and the steppers. Windows will not correctly see the uno but the board power light is on. Any ideas on the most likely culprit and how much was fried?

How did you have it plugged in? The first time Directly to the uno and not on the pig tale on the shield. Afterwards I plugged into the pigtail using the 24v supply.

That's what got it. You can't plug the power supply directly into the Uno. It gets its power from the USB and the motors get their power from the 24V power supply at screw terminals. It could have possibly fried the stepper drivers as well.
