I'd like to build some handheld gaming systems and need some 2" thick material to cut them out of. Was considering hardwoods, but have zero clue where to begin sourcing materials. Would need to be at least 8 inch wide and 2 inch thick. I can chop the length down as needed.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Might want to consider gluing up 1" thick stock. Probably cheaper and may also be more stable over the long haul.

The side walls of the final product will be about 3-5mm thick. Will glued pieces hold up that thin? Sorry, I have a ton to learn about wood. Have only ever built things out of metal or plastic. Lol

I agree on gluing up the stock.

Actually tests have shown that good wood glue like Titebond is actually stronger than the surounding wood when you try to break the joint so it should be okay.

Fantastic! I'll buy Titebond and smush some stuff together. Thanks!

I would suggest trying to get closer to 5 mm especially where you have only end grain as that would be a bit weak as you get down to 3 mm or so. If you are doing something that thin I would also slow down the feed rate a bit to avoid blowout.
