I have been having a problem with my Carver King when cutting. The pc attached the usb drops out, I loose the com ports, and the cnc stops cutting. I dont see this as a pc problem as I have attached several with the same problem. I have noticed that the when this happens that the stepper motor driver on the shield board get supper hot. I have a fan right next to the shield board but the heat sinks will get too hot to touch. I have had to replace them several time. I have gone through replacing all the electronics. The shield board, the arduino board, the stepper drivers. I am at a loss what to do next. Could the stepper motors go bad or be causing this problem? They do run until the usb drops out. Any suggestions on what to check at this point would be helpful?

Regular stepper driver replacement is not normal. Failure mode on thosebis usually either DOA or they last practically indefinitely. I do wonder if you don’t have electrical issues at your location because I know we have had to replace two 611 routers for you, which is also very abnormal as probably less than 5 total have failed in the field. I think there is likely some electrical ripple in your home supply. A UPS would likely assist with disconnect issues. A powered USB hub would be a cheaper noise immunity solution, but if there is noisy incoming power that one wouldn’t help.
The steppers will get hot. That is normal, even though they do seem uncomfortably hot.

UPS was the only thing that solved my milling interuption issues, 100%.

Thank you gentlemen for your responses. The nice thing was I had to go into work today for server migrations and a facility shutdown. My manager just happened to give me a new UPS so I will give this a try this week. Hopefully this will fix my issues with my cnc. Again thank you!

Please report back, your notes may help someone else in the future, plus now I want to know what the culprit was!

Wow, that was such a timely gift from the manager. Please let us know how that goes.

OK this was the problem, unclean power supplying the cnc. It looks like the arduino board(s) must have clean power. In the past I have had the usb drop out from time to time and I originally thought this may have been a EMI problem so I tried to separate power wires from control wires and this seemed to correct the issue. Lately the problem really got worse to the point that I could not finish a cut. After 1 hour of cutting the usb would drop out and I would have to realign to zero starting point and restart my cut only to have the usb drop out again. After I hooked up the ups I did not make any other changes to my cnc setup and start cutting. I have not seen the usb drop out at all since and now and have been able to complete cuts that take hours to run. The ups that I have hooked to my cnc is a Cyber Power 1500va. I hope this will help others out that you really need to have clean power feeding your cnc system.
Thank you all for your help and support.
