Has anyone installed a 800W spindle on their Carve King? If so does the extra weight cause any problems? What plus and minuses did you find with it? Thanks

I installed a VFD and 800 watt spindle motor on my Carve King. It isn't more weight than the Dewalt 611 router. And I haven't had any trouble running for the last year.
Advantages: Starting, stopping and setting speed of the motor programmatically with G-Code. Sealed brushless ac motor, more robust and less maintenance. VFD displays motor speed. Disadvantages: None now that it is all working. 😉 Getting it all together, wired up and GRBL control settings to work the way I wanted took some trial and error. One caveat, I have an electronics controls background so it was right up my alley. There was next to no information on how to do this other than the basic instruction manual with the VFD.

Thanks Bruce. I thought the 611 was a little lighter but apparently so close doesn't make a difference. Is yours air or water cooled? I'm planning on air cooled to keep things simpler, plus I won't be pushing it all that hard. I also have an electronics background, plus have been reading some threads discussing VFD's and spindles, so hopefully won't have major problems.

I'm using an air cooled to keep it simple as well. Speaking of motor loading, I set up my VFD to output a 0-10vdc signal connected to a simple analog meter that shows motor loading. It usually sits close to 0 and only bounces up for a split second when starting or stopping the motor. If you have any questions, let me know.

Sounds good, thanks again.

FYI: I got to double checking the spindle weight. I remembered a number of 3.7 but that was in Kg. So actual weight is 8.15 lbs.

Interesting. Seems many of the 800W spindles I have looked at listed 2.5 to 2.85 Kg. Maybe they are fudging?

I don't have any experience with 800w spindle motors. But the ability to control spindle speed while machining is a huge advantage IMO. I think Bruce linked a YouTube video by HAAS about chatter in another thread and how to counteract it with the correct/different spindle speeds in different areas. I've never machined anything harder than wood and plastics. So haven't had to contend with chatter much. But if you plan to mill harder materials like metals, the 800w spindle is worth the trouble.
I have a homemade dust shoe mounted to the z carriage of my carve King and don't notice the extra weight or drag from it. So +1 on the carve King being able to handle some weight on the z axis.
