So my Uno seems to work but the steppers won't even twitch. Here's a video
Any advice?

Have you tried just using the machine controls to jog the machine around as opposed to running a homing cycle? Does it do the same thing? Not being able to move the XY bed is normal if there's power to the motors, the fact that you can move the Z axis is odd.. That one shouldn't move either when there is power to the motors..

Hey. Looks to me like possibly the Z stepper driver is popped or was DOA. Could also be no enable signal to it. For what it's worth, those with homing enabled will always (unless you hack it out of the code, but that's a different matter) open into alarm lock, so that part is normal. It went back into alarm lock after the $H because it was listening for a Z switch contact that never happened, seeing as how the Z isn't moving. Here are the troubleshooting steps for your problem that don't involve using a multimeter oscilloscope. Don't read this all at once and get frazzled by it. Just try each step at a time and move down if it doesn't work. 1) I would type $X to unlock then jog X and Y using the machine control tab in UGS. If that works then see if Z jogs. If not something is crazy there, which seems to be the case. 2) Confirm that your Z motor is actually plugged in correctly. It seems silly, but I have plugged it in a prong off before such that three pins were on but one wasn't. 3) Power everything down, including unplugging the USB and wait at least 60 seconds. (seriously wait, if you unplug motors too soon after power down it will arc at the driver and cook them). Unplug the X and the Z motor. Plug the Z motor into the X port. Power everything on (SIDE NOTE: We don't cover this in instructions but one way to avoid the spark is to plug in the power cord and THEN plug in the USB and open grbl. It makes that little spark because the steppers are enabled once the USB is already in so they are pulling power as soon as the cord gets close to the adapter plug). Okay, so now the Z motor is on the X port. Give a jog command to X. Does Z move? IF yes, we know the motor is A OK. (low likelihood of a motor problem) 4) Unplug everything, including the USB and wait at least 60 seconds. Pull out the Z stepper driver and install the spare that was provided (we send 4 drivers for just such an occurrence). Plug the Z motor in and power up (power plug first, then USB). Unlock grbl and attempt to jog Z. Does it move? If so, great. You are good to go. 5) If that doesn't work I'll explain the two minute procedure to clone / slave the spare port to Z (the one labelled A) to get away from anything going on on the Z port on the stepper shield. It's basically you use that extra jumper we sent and steal one from M0 jump point on the Z to do this on the left side of the stepper shield: Put the jumper than still on Z on the M1 jump point on A. Put the stepper driver on A. Power up, type $102=40 then enter into the command line. Attempt to move Z. If it moves, then there was something awry with the stepper shield. If it doesn't, we'll send new boards priority mail. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm here to help.

I have 2 bad stepper drivers. The Z driver, and the spare driver were both bad. I know this because I tried the Y driver on the Z slot and the motor goes up and down fine. Putting the former Z driver in the Y slot freezes up Y movement.
Then I tried the spare stepper driver with very similar results.
Instead of not working at all the spare will kind of quiver in place whether it is on the X or the Y.
Where can I get some spare stepper drivers?

We will send you some. Please confirm though that a known good driver works in the X port. I want to make sure there is nothing on the Z port busting the driver.

My working drivers work in the Z port, and they work after I return them to their original place.

TI have tried the USB cables on both my computers: laptop and new desktop, running java, latest version, but both don't recognize the USB cable. They keep asking for a serial port/cable? I need to know if this is really a cable or software issue as I have downloaded the recommended programs.

I'm not clear on what you are doing exactly. What do you mean they don't recognize the USB cable? Do you mean it says no ports found? When you plug in the uno board to your USB port open device manager. Open to nodes for USB Devices and COM & LPT devices. Unplug the uno and plug it back in. What comes up? If unknown device or anything other than "arduino uno" or "uno", see this thread (click here) that covers manual install of drivers.

Ok, looked at the downloads, nothing there seems to be for windows 10. What I meant that the Netbeans 8, asks for a serial cable on my desktop. laptop sees the uno board, but not the driver.
