Every time I connect the power cable to the terminal I see a small spark and a pop. The cables are not touching each other. Wondering if there is a short somewhere? But the green light on the UNO board is still green. Would that have messed up the shield?

Whenever the uno is plugged in the motors are enabled. When you get the power plug close when the motors are enabled it "pulls" the power to it, creating that arc. It's not really a dangerous arc, but the electronics don't like it. The instructions talk about plugging in the power supply and then the usb cable for this reason... so the power plug will already be seated when the motors start drawing power.
The beep from the computer is just acknowledging that it was plugged in. I see you are in the manual driver install thread so we'll have that discussion there. For what it's worth, the auto driver installation takes place in the background.
