I made a Challenge Coin holder for my son who is a chaplain in the USAF and just made the rank of captain. The wood is cherry and used Artcam (Carvco) software. I did the relief carving with a 1/4" flat endmill for the roughing operation and 1/16" ball endmill for the finishing. The v-carving for the lettering and Chaplains Emblem was done with a 1/4" 60deg V-bit and clearing and finishing was a 1.5mm endmill. I used an 1/8" 4 flute endmill to do the profile cut out. The finish is a Varathane stain "Golden Pecan" with a satin lacquer clear coat. I tried using oak but the grain was too coarse and I had a lot of tear out with the Chaplains Emblem. The Cherry is really nice for this kind of detail. First time using cherry in fact. I also used threaded inserts to facilitate packing and assembly since I'm shipping it to Alaska were he is stationed.

The Cherry is really nice for this kind of detail. First time using cherry in fact. Yep! Now you know why woodworkers like cherry so much! Plus, it smells good when cutting.
