So, I was playing around with the tiling function in Vcarve trying to do something bigger than the carve king work area. I think I know why the cut out was a little off, had some trouble moving board and ended up resetting the x and y.
My main questions are this, what do you think happened to the H? Also, why do you think the first half letters did not carve as deep as the second set. On the set-up the text was done all as one.
Anyway, just want to see if there are some things I might need check or do to ensure it does not happen again.
Would the router cable running over one of the rails have enough force to hinder the movement of the x?
Thanks for the suggestions
Mike

looks like your indexing is off a bit.
Here's a video that might be of help

The "H" was actually before I had to index and shift the board.

The "H" was actually before I had to index and shift the board. It looks like there is some type of electrical noise or something else causing additional steps. I don’t think it would be missed steps (mechanical) because both of the errors are on opposite sides of the H. If you had missed steps it would be offset to one side or the other or somewhere in between, unless the finished H that we see is actually smaller than it is supposed to be, then it might be mechanical. Were you watching the router when it was cutting? Was the H the last cut operation? Besides that, the video Bruce posted is good info for tiling.

Also, as far as the words not carving as deep, what depth were they supposed to be carved to? Is the first set of words correct depth or are the second set correct depth? I would first cut some test pieces without tiling and see if everything is working correctly. Just cut some squares and circles or whatever with a flat endmill, then measure the depth of cut and the dimensions of your shape to make sure the machine is doing what it’s supposed to be doing.

I read one of your threads asking about where to install the router in the clamp. It is true that you can install it where ever you like in the clamp, except if you install it too high it will hit the Z axis motor bracket when your z axis travels in the z+ direction. Check that also. I installed mine to when my z has traveled to the max + position it barely misses the z motor plate bracket.

It's possible get a LITTLE (maybe ¼"?) extra Z-axis range by cutting a notch in the plastic cover of the DeWalt router before mounting it in the clamp as stever suggests. ¼" isn't much, but, in some cases, will be useful. And the higher the router is mounted, the less leverage the cutting bit will have to twist it in the single clamp of a Carve King or MegaV.
