While I can't take any credit for the DXF file this was generated from, I'd say a pretty successful first run at V-carving! Picture doesn't really do it justice, the detail is incredible. The circle diameter is 9". Gcode created with F-Engrave (free stuff guys). 1/2" diameter 60 degree V bit and cut from 3/4" MDF, took about 1 hour and 4 minutes to cut... There's a few minor spots where the MDF chipped out, but hardly noticeable... Now on to figuring out how to finish MDF in a way that will make it shine :/ Attachments:

The more you look at it the more detail pops out like character faces buried in there and such... I'm not really a Star Wars guy, but thought it was pretty dang cool and worth a try. Was pretty impressed with the way F-Engrave handled it. It did take about an hour for F-Engrave to do its thing, but if anything, I'm patient.. Probably not as perfect/precise as Aspire or Art-Cam would be, but certainly acceptable (and free!)
Absolutely Derek. If you haven't already, let me get a better photo. Have some shellac cooking on the MDF now (pre-paint) and already some of the intricacies are easier to see.

Post paint... still wet. Hard to tell by the photo but it's a copper color with black. I'm absolutely not known for finishing skills... A very light top sanding and one more coat of shellac and I think it turned out alright Attachments:

It looked good in the picture before you painted it, but the black and copper colors really bring out the detail even more. Great job!

No real sanding involved.. Sealed the whole thing with spray shellac. Spray painted with metallic copper colored spray paint on the whole thing. Waited for that to dry good. Then used a cheap chip brush and acrylic black paint painted in small sections over the top pushing the paint down in the cracks. Wiped off the top with a damp cloth followed by a dry paper towel as I went.. Worked pretty well but I would go a little slower next time (yeah right, I hate painting).
