Maker-Race - Round 2!
A 3d plastic resin printer + my 13 yr old vs. the MillRight CNC PowerRoute cutting aluminum + daddy (me),
I updated key fob lock button design & nearly all of the manufacturing strategies were updated Fusion360 prior to this round (another late night).
I gave my son the updated 3d model (.STL) from Fusion on a USB stick and the clock started. A new price to the winner for the quickest build (3d model to handing over the part) - whoever gets the part done in time - gets an ice cream cone!
9 minutes afterwards, my son heads downstairs to the garage w/ a USB stick and the .phz file from Chitubox.
18 minutes after that, I finish my machine strategies tweaking & head downstairs to the garage w/my laptop.
Here's the updated design & machining strategies
to be fair I spent quite a lot of time the night prior on machining strategies - basically wasting time trying to make 3d Adaptive in Fusion360 take of a little bit of material w/ too large of an end mill in a wierd spot. Something behind the fusion adaptive strategy kept crashing. I restarted so manytimes. Instead, I optted to use a scallop & in USG - I overrode the feed rate to bring it down to like 30% or so of the calculated rate so I the tool could go through "deep" sections of aluminum w/ a finishing strategy. It worked like a charm actually.
28 minutes later, ....
the PowerRoute & I finish machining, I cut the tabs out, then grind the tab remnants off.
AHA! Finally beat my 13 yr old son! I can hear the 3d printer still raising & lowering it's build plate. I check it, still 5 minutes left. + he still has to clean it up & cure it in the UV curing station. Which should be a 5-10 min at the most. He forgot to set a timer and finishes it instead 27 minutes later.
The fit of the button in the cavity still needed improvement, so afterwards my icecream (+ mocha .. and after getting the family a little pint of blackberry truffle icecream, I went back home & made the outter flange of the button wider, added thickness to the backend corners, shortened the length of it. I had to sand this quite a bit to fit.
Have a good week everybody!
