So I decided to use some scrap plywood to make my first 3D cut. Next time I do one I will be confident and use hardwood that doesn’t have these “layers” that can chip away. Roughing pass .125 Ball Nose 100 IPM - .035 stepover Router at maybe 22K rpm Carve time 2hrs and some change Finishing pass .125 Ball nose 50IPM 0.0125 stepover Router again at 22K rpm Carve time 1 hour Same but for profile cutout. Anyone have tips to optimize my speeds/feed/etc? Suggestions for next time when I use hardwood?

Congrats on your first 3d cut, it looks like you've got it dialed in. That will look really good in hardwood.

I'd probably go a little bigger on the roughing toolpath. Gets rid of more material faster. On finishing passes I shoot for 20-30% stepover. What program are you using for your 3D work?

I'd probably go a little bigger on the roughing toolpath. Gets rid of more material faster. On finishing passes I shoot for 20-30% stepover. What program are you using for your 3D work? Trying Aspire to see if I like it and you mean like a 1/4 bit? Yup. But it kind of just depends on the carving. If it's not real intricate you could rough with 1/4 and finish with 1/8. For me, I use a 4.2 degree tapered ball nose for me finish work. If there's alot of material that needs to be removed first I will do 1/4 roughing leaving .05 of material to be removed on finishing. If the 1/4 is too big then rough with 1/8. Just depends on size and level of detail. That storm Trooper one I did was rough with 1/4 flat, another rough with 1/8 ball, then finish with tapered ball.
