Hey everyone! Hope all is good. I have an issue and hopefully it can be fixed. I started engraving an image and towards the end it made a weird noise and starting cutting jacked up. The issue occurred on the right side of the machine and I will post the difference in a minute. I am guessing I lost some steps and would love any and all feedback on what I should do. I have been having issues with the right side of my machine, so I trammed my router and still an issue. Ensured my rails were exactly the same height everywhere... Hmmm. Possibly the right lead screw needs tweaking somehow? Backlash?

There are steps being lost it appears.
Possible causes:
V wheels not tight or installed wrong. For instance, I've seen someone install the washers on the outside of the V wheels instead of between the bearings causing it to bind all the time.
The antibacklash nut is too tight causing it to bind.
The stepper driver voltage is set too low or too high. If too low, it will be underpowered. If too high, it will get to hot and go into overheat protection momentarily. The window isn't that tight, but if you should make sure you are between .64 and .66 volts on the Carve King.
There is too much misalignment between the motor, coupler, antibacklash nut, and idler. It will cause binding at either end of travel. You can usually see this through visual inspection.
The motor coupler isn't screwed tightly to the motor shaft or the coupler.
A motor is bad. This is happens about one in every 1000 motors. If it rapids fine you can probably rule that out.

Thanks for the input on where to check. Stepper drives are all between .64-.66 (thankyou alligator clip) V-wheels are all moving smoothly and I wouldn’t say too tight. There may be slight misalignment ... can’t really tell. But 100% sure that when I turn the coupler the screw does not move .... found my issue. Still going to check the alignment when I figure out a good way to do it.
I feel like a lot of my issues come down to me being scared when putting it together. I did not want to “break” parts and now it’s coming back to bite me.
Thank you Derek! This should now bring me back operational and help me if I ever need to troubleshoot again.

I was going to say backlash I I had something similar happen a few times and there is a very thin line to the tolerance. Make sure if you do adjust the backlash I always now move your machine in every possible direction a couple of time to make sure it doesn’t bind. 👍 And make sure you unplug the USB so steppers are not active lol Done that myself 😔

Great! Glad it was an easy fix.
